Mr. Mahender Singh belongs to 1981 batch of IRS (Customs and Central Excise). He has more than 35 years of experience of administration of Indirect Taxation i.e. Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax. During his illustrious carrier, he handled several important and sensitive assignments in different parts of the country. He has extensive exposure in the field of anti-smuggling, anti-evasion and anti-drug trafficking cases. He has distinction of getting trained by RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Canada) and CBP (Customs and Border Protection) of USA.
As Additional Director General, Central Excise and Service Tax Intelligence, he handled several high profile cases of tax evasion. As Director General of Audit under Central Board of Excise and Customs, he streamlined the process of audit of central excise and service tax formations throughout the country. As Director General of GST under Central Board of Excise and Customs, he led a team of officers who were assigned to do the ground work for roll out of GST in India. In May 2017, he was elevated as Member, Central Board of Excise and Customs and was given all important charge of GST.
As Member GST, he played a stellar role and led a team of dedicated officers of central government and effectively coordinated with all the states and union territories which led to successful roll out of GST in the midnight of 30th June – 01st July, 2017. After the implementation of GST on 01st July, 2017, he headed several committees which were entrusted with the task of smooth implementation of GST and tide over the difficulties faced by trade and industry. During a period of one and a half year i.e. between July 2017 and December 2018 he organized several conferences and seminars in coordination with the trade and industry and with the state governments and union territories to tide over the teething problems of GST. After completing 37 years of distinguished service, in which he was awarded ‘Appreciation Certificate’ twice by Hon’ble Finance Minister of India, he superannuated as Member (GST), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs on 31st December, 2018.
In March 2019, on the basis of recommendations of a High Power Committee chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Sh. Mahender Singh was appointed Member of first Lokpal of India by Hon’ble President of India. As Member, Lokpal of India, Sh. Mahender Singh handled several high profile cases of corruption. After completing his tenure of 5 years he superannuated in March, 2024.
